SINO IRON
project with massive
magnitude maintains focus
on a myriad of matters

CITIC PACIFIC MINING
CITIC Pacific Mining, an Australian subsidiary of CITIC Pacific, a
Hong Kong incorporated company listed on the Hong Kong Stock
Exchange, is moving ahead with plans to deliver the largest
magnetite mining operation in Australia’s history.
The Sino Iron project is a truly unique, immensely
challenging and exciting project,” Executive Chairman
Dr Dongyi Hua said.
Located at Cape Preston, 100 kilometres south-west of
Karratha in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, the project will
feature downstream processing of magnetite iron ore, rather
than hematite iron ore which is typically mined in the region.
A highly valuable resource for the steel industry, magnetite
requires beneficiation before it can be exported. This process has
traditionally been considered too complex to be cost-effectively
performed in Australia. However, CITIC Pacific Mining’s access
to prefabricated Chinese processing technology ensures the
company can purify the material at a reduced cost.
The complexity of the beneficiation process also means the
operation is much larger than a standard hematite operation.
The Sino Iron project is composed of eight major components
connected by several custom-built major roads.
The project will include a mine with a 25-year life span, some
of the largest grinding mills in the world, the first combined
cycle, gas fired power station in the Pilbara and the first port to
