be built in the region in 40 years.
The project is a result of China’s rapid economic and
industrial expansion that has altered international trade,
investment and production patterns at regional and global
levels,” Dr Hua said. “It is a first-hand example of how this
growth can be of benefit to Australia, particularly the resources
sector in Western Australia. Australia is well placed to gain from
China’s rapid industrial expansion because of its flexibility,
dynamism and because of the complementarities between the
two economies,” he said.
The project represents and embodies the synergy of a
Chinese-Australian partnership that will produce significant
economic and social benefits for our countries for decades
to come.”
The project will add an estimated $75 billion in export income
to the Australian economy over the next 25 years. It will also
directly contribute about $3.3 billion in royalties to Western
Australia. The Pilbara community will benefit from rates that
will be paid over 25 years to the Shire of Roebourne.
The project’s significant investment in downstream
processing will also ensure a range of employment opportunities
for Australian miners. It will create about 4,500 jobs during
construction and 1,000 permanent roles once in operation, in
addition to about 250 positions at corporate level.
While CITIC Pacific Mining is owned by a Hong-Kong listed
company, the vast majority of its employees are Australian. This
unique cultural mix exposes staff to a working environment that
blends Western and Chinese business practices and mindsets.
The company is also collaborating with local Aboriginal
traditional owner groups in the Cape Preston area to
implement training, employment, business and community
development programs.
These include a Work Ready initiative and a partnership
with the Clontarf Foundation whose education-based program
supports Aboriginal boys in Roebourne and Karratha.
The company also supports numerous other community
partnerships and events including Karratha’s FeNaClNG festival,
Roebourne Women's Day and local cultural and sporting events
and charities.
While still relatively new, the project has already achieved
a great deal within a short time frame and I am confident of
our collective ability to deliver this project,” Dr Hua said.
One such achievement is the custom-built accommodation
village that houses CITIC Pacific Mining’s fly-in fly-out
workforce. Located approximately one hour’s drive south of
Karratha airport, the Eramurra village features 1,750 rooms
equipped with internet access and entertainment. The village
also features two gyms, a swimming pool, multipurpose sports
courts, a retail store and tavern with beer garden, a dining room
and 24-hour recreation room. The company also offers staff
monthly scheduled entertainers including bands, comedians and
sporting professionals.
I am personally very proud to be part of this ambitious
undertaking. Our journey will no doubt provide us with an
incredible sense of fulfilment and achievement once we attain
our goal,” Dr Hua said.
