Mining Engineering
Scholarship (shared)
Nathan Dalton
Since receiving the WAMC
scholarship in 2010, I have had
the opportunity to work in a
variety of roles within the mining
industry. Most recently, I worked
as a vacation student at Newmont
Boddington Gold open pit mine.
Following the time spent on site,
I am now completing my final year project titled “Geotechnical
Domain Model of Newmont Boddington Gold Open Pit Mine”.
I have been offered and have accepted a graduate position
with Newmont following the completion of my studies at the
end of 2012.
I would again like to thank the WAMC for the mining
engineering scholarship. Other than working for a PhD student
in the rock mechanics laboratory on campus, I have not been
required to work during my final year of study. This has allowed
me to concentrate all of my time on study, and as such this final
year has been even more enjoyable than the previous years.

Environmental
Engineering Scholarship
Lewis Mounsher
The last twelve months of my
studies have been particularly
rewarding and relevant.
I have been fortunate to gain
field and laboratory experience
in a number of practical disciplines,
including biomonitoring, mapping
and
environmental
impact
assessment. However, the highlight of the year has been
the opportunity to undertake a year-long research project in
cooperation with Alcoa.
The project has entailed the sampling of ant assemblages
within certain zones of the jarrah forest at a decommissioned
bauxite mine, in order to compare the long-term effectiveness
of a number of minesite rehabilitation techniques. This research
has given me an opportunity to meet industry professionals,
and has provided me with a detailed insight into one of the roles
of environmental science in mining.
Throughout the last two years of my studies, the WAMC
scholarship has alleviated much of the stress associated
with university life. I am extremely grateful for the financial
and professional support the Club has given me.

Geology
Scholarship
Ryan Dethian
This year, I have been undertaking
an honours degree in geology.
The course has taken me to
Meekatharra to map a gold pit, as
well as to China for a tectonic field
course. The course in China was an
amazing experience – I travelled
through the countryside learning
about the geology and culture of the region. The honours course
has developed my research skills and increased my interest in
structural geology. I also enjoyed being a mentor for a group of
first year students to help them settle into university life.
My work experience continued throughout the year with Rio
Tinto Iron Ore on a project involving planning and finances.
From this work, I learned a great deal about other aspects of
the mineral industry apart from geology. I will start a graduate
position with the same department at Rio Tinto in 2013, and will
be involved with tenement exploration.
Thanks to the WA Mining Club for providing the financial
assistance to help me achieve my goals.

Metallurgy
Scholarship

2012
has been a very fulfilling
year! I completed my degree in
metallurgical engineering (with
honours), and currently work at
IMO in Perth.
Over the past seven months, I
worked as a contract commissioning
engineer at BHP Billiton’s Worsley
Alumina refinery on their Efficiency and Growth (E&G) project,
where I gained experience with the procedures involved in the
start-up and troubleshooting of new and modified equipment.
Currently I am working on proposals for prefeasibility, definitive
feasibility and test work studies for new and existing plants
across Australasia and Africa.
My experience so far is reassurance that I have made the
right choice in pursuing a career in metallurgy.
The financial assistance and networking opportunities
provided by the WA Mining Club have played a major role in
realising my goals and steering my professional development
in the right direction. Thank you for this valuable support.
