and remembering others
Western Australia’s hardworking mining community showed
they still know how to have fun, as 550 guests descended upon
the Hyatt Grand Ballroom to celebrate St Barbara’s Day. This
traditional celebration of the patron saint of miners and geologists
is held on the first Friday of December, and is a major annual
event in the WA Ming Club’s luncheon calendar.
As part of the St Barbara’s Day tribute, the Club has formerly
held remembrance services at the University of WA to honour
those whose lives have been lost in the industry. In 2012 the Club
decided to hold the remembrance service as part of the luncheon
formalities at the Hyatt ballroom. Bernie Siddall presented the
service with compassion, and whilst the WA resources industry
was fortunate to have no work-related death during 2012, guests
remembered those lost in previous years with one minute’s
silence, followed by a moving piece played by a piper from the
WA Police Pipe Band.
Following the commemorations, it was time for the celebrations.
Now a regular feature as MC at Club luncheons, Babs McHugh
added her own brand of humour as the afternoon got underway.
The local live music, wines and splendid fare contributed to the
convivial atmosphere resonating throughout the room.
