Land.Mark.Art program, beginning as an illustration on paper
of local seed forms. Installed in Port Hedland’s Wedge Street
Seeds of Life’ is actually a series of shade structures – essential
to the public places of any sundrenched Pilbara community – that
filter a constellation of shadow and light through the artist’s clever
appropriation of her original seed drawings. Another example is
the playful artworks installed in Cemetery Beach, Port Hedland.
Public art produced through Land.Mark.Art offers rich rewards
for a local community – serving practical needs, adding interest
and opportunities to interact with local places, and, through the
creative expression of the Indigenous artists involved, articulating
important cultural stories, histories and aspects of culture.
It goes without saying that the Pilbara is a region that has
experienced immense transformation and prosperity due to
the wealth of minerals and resources it harbours. But lasting
transformation can only be achieved through the funding and
implementation of projects that speak of the heart of a community.
For capacity building is really about building human capital, and
human capital can only be built, and maintained, by responding to
the needs, interests and potential of local people.
It is hoped that future property development projects will take
advantage of the abundant talent to be found within studios like
Spinifex Hill and contract them to produce public art outcomes
that enrich local developments.
The new Spinifex Hill Studio will be open to the public from
February 2014.
FORM and principal partner BHP Billiton have worked
together in the Pilbara for nine years, building capacity, creativity
and community.

The nature of
public art means
that if done well,
it can speak
volumes about the
identity of a place
and its people.
Good public art is
beautifully designed
and expertly
constructed,
but it also serves
to show a deeper,
more finely grained
insight into the
environment in
which it inhabits...
