The launch event represents a one-year milestone in the lead up to the Austmine 2017 Conference and provides an opportunity for our members and guests to start the conversation around the conference theme – Mining’s Innovation Imperative.
Andrew Harding will give us an overview on what Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore business is doing to maintain leadership in innovation and technology.
Rio Tinto’s global iron ore production in 2016 is expected to be around 350 million tonnes. Their significant Pilbara based operations include a fully integrated network of 15 mines, 1,700 kilometres of railway and four independent port terminals. Recent infrastructure expansion has increased capacity to 360 million tonnes a year. Rio Tinto has a significant presence in Australia, China and Korea, with around half of our global operations based in Australia and an important customer base and large proportion of sales to China and Korea.
Andrew Harding was appointed Chief Executive of Rio Tinto’s extensive Iron Ore product group in February 2013, accountable for operations and projects in Australia, Canada and India and for Rio Tinto Marine.
Andrew previously spent three years as chief executive of the Rio Tinto Copper product group, responsible for a range of operations and projects around the world. This included the development of the world-class Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia.
His Rio Tinto career also includes being president at Kennecott Utah Copper in Salt Lake City, along with key roles in the Energy, Bauxite and Technology and Innovation portfolios.
