In addition to announcing the 2011 WA Mining Club scholarship winners, Minesite also took the opportunity to catch up with winners from previous years,
to see how their studies have been faring and what practical work exposure they have been undergoing. Their experiences are diverse and their outlooks
exciting, but they share a clear passion for their chosen field and their energetic enthusiasm is contagious. We wish them every success in their future careers.
2010 Environmental Engineering Scholarship
LEWIS MOUNSHER
2011 has been a fantastic year.
The financial support of the WAMC
scholarship has enabled me to focus
wholeheartedly on my studies,
resulting in my best grades to date.
Being able to prioritise my time has also
allowed me to fully immerse myself in
university life, thereby getting more
out of each unit I undertake.
I’ve been given the opportunity to
experience a variety of fieldwork in
environmental science and geology over the past six months, and
I have gained valuable experience in a mining-related discipline.
Through membership of the WAMC, I feel better equipped to
make informed decisions about my future career path in mining.
Club luncheons have served as fantastic networking opportunities
whilst also providing up to date information on developments
within the industry. I am excited to be approaching my final year
of study and I look forward to the prospect of undertaking vacation
work over the coming summer.
2010 Metallurgy Scholarship
TOBI FREEMAN
I am now in my final semester at the
WA School of Mines carrying out
experiments for my research project
and working on a process plant
design project. As both are capstone
units, there has been a tremendous
increase in the amount of time
spent for research and study. Due to
financial support from the WAMC
scholarship and not having to worry
about part time work, it has given me the freedom to work late
hours and to focus solely on my studies.
Over the summer, I had the opportunity to work at BHP
Billiton’s Kambalda nickel concentrator, where I gained hands-on
experience in nickel sulphide processing.
I have also recently just returned from the WASM International
Metallurgy field trip through which I was exposed to metallurgical
practices and research interests around Europe.
I have no doubt that working in the mining industry will be a
highly satisfactory and rewarding experience for me.

CODI BUSSON
2011 was a big year for me in my
university career as it involved moving
to Kalgoorlie to undertake the third
year of my degree at the WA School of
Mines campus.
The start of semester was initiated
with a trip to the United States to
compete in the international Mining
Games. This was a good opportunity to
spend time with other WASM students
and make a group of new friends.
Having the WAMC scholarship was instrumental in allowing
me to undertake the trip as financially it allowed me the freedom
to leave the country for three weeks. It also allows me to focus on
my studies full time without the necessity to maintain part time
or casual work.
The networking opportunity that this scholarship provides is
important, as it helps to have a list of professionals that I have met
and am able to contact if I need help or advice.

NATHAN DALTON
The WAMC Scholarship has been a
huge help to me over the last year as
it has given me more time to enjoy my
studies and to concentrate on building
my future career.
Over the 2010/11 summer break, I
received a vacation scholarship to work
at the Australian Resources Research
Centre with the Predictive Geoscience
Group. Following this, I was offered a
junior position at CSA Global through a
contact I had met at a WAMC luncheon.
Working in the industry whilst completing my degree has been
a huge asset to me, as not only do I have access to professionals
across a variety of disciplines in the mining industry, I am
also exposed to the day to day workings of a resource industry
company. This summer I hope to complete some vacation work on
site. I believe this experience will help round off my education as
a mining engineer.
2010 Geology Scholarship
RYAN DETHIAN
I am now in my final year of a double
degree in Geology and Geophysics. The
first semester was intense but I enjoyed
it and achieved good results. During
the last semester I will go on two field
trips to Meekatharra and Adelaide,
which will be great experiences.
It has been an amazing four years
completing this degree, where I have
not only gained knowledge but also
formed great friendships.
