STRATEGIC APPROACH
BHP Billiton Iron Ore has a team of 80 environmental
specialists and consultants who set high standards as leaders
in the industry and are dedicated to leaving a positive legacy.
For every mine the company follows a process to identify
risks to species and communities, and develop measures to
protect them.
This strategic approach builds a picture of what exists around
operations and allows the company to meet its regulatory
obligations. BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s ability to rehabilitate areas
to a high standard also helps to ensure future approvals for new
mining areas, allowing the company to grow.
The team regularly carries out environmental surveys
and co-operates closely with state and federal government,
conservation groups, indigenous people and the community to
improve transparency and share information.
The company has developed a standard environmental
survey method for all contractors to ensure systems and data
are consistent and reliable.
Surveys are extended beyond the immediate area of
operations to provide information about the region and its
ecosystems. This broadens knowledge of species existing
within the area of operation and assists with management
and protection.
