WA MINING CLUB’S
2011 GALA BALL
round 450 splendidly dressed guests attended the
WA Mining Club’s social highlight of the year – the
Gala Ball. This year, guests joined a celebration of the
Golden Age of Film
...
Passing through the Hyatt foyer’s ‘Hollywood Walk
of Fame’, where gold stars were inscribed with the names of ‘famous’
event sponsors, guests were greeted by a rowdy contingent of camera-
bearing ‘paparazzi’ who crazily snapped photos and attempted to get
a word from the star guests as they made their way down the red carpet
to enter the Grand ballroom.
Two larger-than-life Academy Award Oscar statuettes graced the
stage, and during the evening a magnificent big screen rolled Hollywood
trailers capturing the glamorous stars of the movie industry’s golden
past. Marilyn, Ginger and Fred, Humphrey and James Dean all made
their way around the room greeting guests, while Dirty Harry, Lara Croft
and other stars were there in (cardboard) spirit.
The evening opened to the smash hit “All That Jazz” with a bevy of
Ziegfield inspired dancers. MC Vince Sorrenti, one of Australia’s leading
comic entertainers, then introduced President Neil Watson who warmly
welcomed guests and thanked sponsors. Neil provided an upbeat review
of the Club’s activities and objectives over the past year and paid tribute
to the enthusiastic committee who worked alongside him.
The sponsors were represented by some very famous voices –
Arnie, Clint, Jack, Bugs, Daffy and a host of Hollywood’s most familiar
characters acknowledged those companies who helped make the
evening a great success.
Later in the evening, the ‘Rat Pack’s Back’ – a trio of fine voices
singing the hits that made Sammy Davis Junior, Frank Sinatra and
Dean Martin famous – entertained the audience with a mix of music and
humour, accompanied by the full sound of the Greg Schultz Big Band.
The Hollywood-inspired ‘Reel to Reel’ dessert, complete with
chocolate reels and film ‘cue cards’ concluded what was a sensational
gourmet meal, and the Greg Schultz Big Band kept the room swinging
while guests danced into the morning hours.
The WA Mining Club’s Gala Ball is rapidly becoming a must-see
‘Main Feature’ on the networking calendar for anyone involved in
the WA mining industry. The pictures here capture some of the
Golden Moments of the 2011 Gala Ball…
