Natural gems
of the north-west
Cossack, on the Point Samson peninsular of the Pilbara coast,
was the birthplace of Western Australia’s pearling industry
and was the home of the colony’s pearling fleet until the 1880s.
By the turn of the century the pearling fleets had moved north to
the rich grounds of Broome’s Roebuck Bay with over 300 pearl
luggers plying the waters for the huge Pinctada Maxima oyster,
whose mother of pearl shell was used to make buttons for
the world market. Cultured pearling techniques were introduced
by the Japanese in the 1950s to Broome, which to the present
day continues to produce the world’s finest quality cultured
South Sea pearls.
Broome’s reputation as the home of the Australian South
Sea pearl was not yet established when Michael and Dr Patricia
Kailis built their first farm in the clear, clean waters of Roebuck
Bay. It was the proceeds from the sale of Patricia’s car which
funded Michael’s first fishing venture. When disease threatened
to kill the oysters and their pearling dreams, Patricia ventured
out to the remote farms to save them. By introducing hygienic
handling practices of the oyster shells, she set new standards
for the rest of the industry.
In 1974 Dr Patricia Kailis opened the first pearl jewellery
retail store in Broome. Over the next three decades the company
grew and evolved into Kailis Australian Pearls, a luxury
brand launched in 2002. Patricia’s passion for pearls gave an
Australian influence to the timelessness of pearl jewellery,
creating a brand to be shared with other gracious women of
style and confidence.
Pearls are a true miracle of nature; a natural gem produced
by a living organism born of the sea and pure in character.
They do not require cutting or shaping like other rough gems.
There are many types of pearl-producing oysters, but none
produce pearls of the size and lustre of the Pinctada Maxima
which is native to the north-west coast of Australia. It takes two
years of care and dedication to produce a single pearl from these
sensitive oysters, which is one of the reasons why Australian
South Sea pearls are regarded as the rarest, most valuable and
desirable pearls in the world.
Kailis treasures the fact that each pearl is a rare and unique
creation and as such, are dedicated to crafting luxurious pieces
of jewellery that make a hero of these precious pearls. Pride in
each carefully hand selected pearl ensures quality pieces that
last through time and beyond trends.
