Overall Winner
The marble mine', Orosei,
Italy, Mattia Vacca
The annual Snowden photographic competition reached new heights this year by showcasing
65
breathtaking images from some of the most remote mining locations in the world. Each year
the competition celebrates the beauty and faces of the mining industry that otherwise may have
been hidden.
Now in its 9th year, the competition received an elevated number of international entries.
All participants rose to the challenge set by the competition’s panel of judges who were looking
for images that resonated with the diversity of the mining industry. True to their word, this year’s
entrants thrived to promote and educate an often-misunderstood industry that continues to touch
many aspects of peoples’ lives.
This year’s overall winner was Mattia Vacca from Italy with his photo titled ‘The marble mine’
winning the $10,000 first prize. The judges were in awe with the detail captured in Mattia’s photo.
The four category winners, all receiving $1,000 in prize money, were: Muhammad Iqbal
in the ‘People in Mining and their Stories’ category, David Yambot in the ‘Sustainability and the
Environment in Mining’ category (also the ‘People’s Choice’ winner), Helga Lucas in the ‘Technology
and Innovation in Mining’ category, and Thanh Hai Nguyen in the ‘Women in Mining’ category.

When so many aspects of mining’s
current downward cycle seem dampened
and downhearted, taking time to review
the artistic output portrayed in the images
submitted into the annual Snowden
photographic exhibition is a reliably
uplifting experience. This year’s fresh
perspectives are as creative as ever,
and we hope you enjoy the handful of
winning shots presented here in
Minesite
.
Our one regret is a lack of space to show
even more of the many entries received
from the immensely talented amateur
photographers involved in the resources
industry right around the globe.
