Infrastructure changes and equipment purchases on both the
Kalgoorlie and Bentley campuses of Curtin University will
continue to be ramped up in the next few years to satisfy the
educational and research requirements of the last remaining
integrated mining school in Australia, the Western Australian
School of Mines (WASM).
Curtin University is the only institution in all of the three
tertiary education programs supported by the Minerals Council
of Australia that provides funding to mining geology, mining
engineering and metallurgical engineering. WASM consists of
more than 2,000 students within its five departments of Applied
Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Spatial Sciences, Mining
Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.
More than 200 staff contribute towards delivering programs
across the three campuses of Kalgoorlie, Bentley, and Curtin’s
Miri Campus in Sarawak, Malaysia, where a petroleum geology
stream is offered in the same location Shell first discovered
oil in 1902. Several hundred international students, from
over 40 different nations, study across these campuses,
bringing diversity to the classroom and an increasing global
network of alumni.
Safeguarding the
mining minds of the future
Through recessions and depressions, through world wars and countless booms and
busts, Curtin’s Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has retained a pivotal role in
educating generations of explorers, miners, engineers, geologists and related scientists.
Started at the turn of the last century, the School has carved an iconic standing
within national and international mining communities, and its world-class reputation
looks set to continue with some seriously heavyweight investment plans for the
future. From percentage increases in staff numbers, to infrastructure spends in the
multi-millions, the scale and size of designs for this centre of excellence show no signs
of slowing, as the School’s Director, Professor Steve Hall, explains.
