Mining
Engineering Scholarship
Holly Kiely
The WAMC scholarship has helped
me to power through my third year
of study.
It was an action packed start
to 2013 with summer vacation
work at Western Areas. During
this time I gained underground
experience driving trucks and
helping out on service crew. I also completed winter vacation
work with La Mancha Resources, where I particularly enjoyed
experiencing residential site work, as opposed to fly-in-fly-out.
The scholarship has unquestionably assisted me in gaining
vacation work in my first and second years of study.
In March I ventured to Colorado for the 35th International
Mining Games where I captained the WASM Wallabies co-ed
team. It was a fantastic experience, and the financial assistance
that the scholarship has provided was extremely beneficial.
I feel privileged to have been awarded the scholarship
it has provided me with several job and networking
opportunities, which have greatly assisted with my
professional development.

Environmental
Engineering Scholarship
Tracey Cousens
Since receiving the WAMC
scholarship in 2011, I have
wrapped up my studies. Over
the past year I volunteered
with government departments
conducting field studies in remote
areas (most recently Boranup
National Park) and have been
involved in designing a community centre in South Fremantle
which is based entirely on sustainable technology.
The WAMC scholarship has continued to benefit me. Not
only was the financial element a blessing, as I was able to reduce
my workload to focus on study, but I also gained a massive
head start, in what are tough economic times for graduate job
seekers, by being able to include the scholarship on my resume
and in job applications. I look forward to entering the workforce
as an environmental scientist.
My sincere thanks go to the WA Mining Club and co-sponsor
RPS for their invaluable support over the past two years.

2013
has been a very busy and
exciting year. I spent the summer
working at Newmont’s Boddington
gold mine getting hands-on
experience in the process plant,
and completing a gold deportment
study for the flotation circuit.
Throughout the year I have
been working on my final year thesis project focusing on the
leaching characteristics of uranium from a natural betafite
crystal. I completed the testwork at the CSIRO’s Australian
Minerals Research Centre in Waterford.
The WAMC scholarship has afforded me the time to continue
volunteering work within the Murdoch University community
as President of the AusIMM student chapter, and as a mentor
for first year engineering students. In March I flew to Colorado
to compete in the International Mining Games and took the
opportunity to visit Newmont’s Carlin Trend operations in
Elko, Nevada.
I am very thankful for the amount of support, advice and
guidance offered by the mining industry. The assistance the
Club has offered me has been invaluable, and I look forward
to making a significant contribution to the minerals industry.

At the end of 2012, I completed
my metallurgical engineering/
chemistry double degree at
Curtin’s Bentley campus. Having
the WAMC scholarship allowed
me to support myself while
concentrating on my studies and it
assisted me in obtaining honours.
After five years, it was a very rewarding feeling to have achieved
success in the first stage of my professional career.
At the start of 2013, I began working full-time for IMO and
have been exposed to many different areas of mining life. This
has taken me from the scoping phase at the office to testwork
at our laboratory, all the way through to production at the
Nullagine gold project.
Thanks again to the WA Mining Club for their support and
assistance, and to the members who keep this industry alive.
