Bill Beament’s fit with mining is the proverbial ‘hand in glove’. He has consistently
embraced it with unflagging enthusiasm, vehement conviction and resolute force.
Affectionately termed Billy the Kid for his relative youth, he may be just one of the boys
on the outside, but there is unmistakable fire and brimstone on the inside.
In the following interview, Bill shares some nuggets of insight formed from a life
typified by hard, hands-on yakka, strong energy, clear skill and an application for
business and management, from his early days in Esperance with the influence of his
entrepreneurial father, to his boarding school days which further shaped his lifelong love
of competitive sport.
Whether learned or innate, one of the striking characteristics that our interview
illustrates is the wholly strategic focus that Bill uses to guide his every career move to
date. He talks candidly about the importance of identifying, cultivating and ultimately
outgrowing his mentors, and how he now in turn guides the aspiring leaders of tomorrow
under his stewardship today.
Through clarity of purpose, downright ability, and a monochrome view on success
(
where failure is not an option), Bill has risen quickly to his current position as Managing
Director of Northern Star Resources, one of the most successful Australian gold
miners of the present day, and is President of the Western Australian School of Mines
Graduates Association. He was awarded First Amongst Equals at the 2013 40under40
Awards, a program that acknowledges the philanthropic pursuits of young individuals,
as well as professional achievements, personal determination and commercial drive.
Despite such tangible achievements, Bill Beament is very much a work in progress;
with unrealised mining ambition bubbling away both in terms of growing Northern Star,
and for Bill the individual. He has fingers in pies of other successful private ventures, and
has half an eye on the longer-term horizon scanning the South American mining scene.
Balancing his Northern Star commitments with time for his growing family is another
work in progress, and Bill finds striking the right work/life balance can be challenging.
However, it is clear that where there is a will, a Bill Beament way is not far behind. This
is the way of success, through establishing clear objectives, being unafraid of calculated
risks, diligent in attention to strategy, and then reviewing and fine-tuning all the way to
the bank. If anyone can write the new rulebook about balancing passion for work with love
and commitment to family, it will be this energetic high achiever.
