As Managing Director of Australian Winders, winding expert and WA Mining Club member Tony O’Brien
oversees the day-to-day running of the office, and the management and recruitment of staff. He pays close
attention to handpicking new staff to ensure they share the values of the existing team.
It is vital that new team members really care about the work we do”, Tony explained. “An honest,
accountable approach is paramount in our game, for when it comes to running a global labour hire business,
nothing is more important than integrity.”
As a winding specialist himself, Tony enjoys occasional international travel to assist young winders in their
training and to further their careers with the company.
Tony became a member of the WA Mining Club in 2010. He enjoys meeting and exchanging ideas with
other members, and values how the Club keeps him abreast of industry developments.

Australian Winders is a global labour hire
company, specialising in large electric
motor and generator repairs, rewinds and
refurbishments. The field service only
nature of the company enables them to
supply complete turnkey solutions, or
experienced staff from winders through
to supervision and project management
of large machine projects.
The company’s greatest strength is
their fast response, travelling to a client’s
location to assist customers to get back
online as soon as possible. Australian
Winders also prides itself on the quality
of the people it supplies. With 550 years
of combined international experience, the
company’s ability to support breakdowns
and schedule outages with the right
people is undeniable.
Australian Winders has secured service
contracts with some of the largest OEM
companies in the world. Along with
regional offices in the USA and the UK,
the group travels the world supplying
a wide variety of mining companies in
Australia and South East Asia, as well as
international heavyweights such as ABB,
Siemens and General Electric.
In recent years, the company has
significantly invested in tooling and
testing equipment to provide customers
with machine inspections from an
experienced ‘winders point of view’.
One example is their ability to detect
partial discharge problems in motors
or generators by using a Corona Camera.
After pinpointing the critical issue,
they can then provide the necessary
resources to repair them within the
same outage period.
In February 2013 Australian Winders
opened their newly acquired rewind
workshop in Midvale, with a high
voltage coil manufacturing capability
and 10 tonne overhead crane. This joint
facility is capable of providing dedicated
winding services to all types and sizes
of electric machines.
