DR DONGYI HUA
EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN
CITIC PACIFIC MINING
The importance of WA’s emerging magnetite
mining and processing industry continues to
receive widespread recognition, as CITIC Pacific
Mining’s Sino Iron project in the Pilbara’s Cape
Preston progresses.
Here, the company’s Executive Chairman,
Dr Dongyi Hua, explains how the importance of
this Goliath of projects goes much further than
just the (dizzyingly significant) economic returns
expected. Considerable social benefits are in
fact already being provided, and will continue
to be channelled through the company’s
close support of the not-for-profit sector, from
multicultural arts initiatives to community
development programs, and beyond.
THE
SIGNIFICANCE
OF SINO
:
Western Australia’s massive Sino Iron project
continues to reach significant milestones
as it prepares to begin exports of magnetite
concentrate. The important pioneering
project, which has a valuable Australia-China
partnership at its core, heralds the arrival
of significant iron ore downstream processing
to our state.
It is the largest magnetite mining and
processing operation under construction
in Australia and one of China’s largest
investments into our resources sector. Its
intensive infrastructure requirements have
seen the employment of a construction
workforce of about 4,000 people, with an
operations workforce expected to provide
about 1,000 jobs.
The Sino Iron project is being developed
by CITIC Pacific Mining (CPM) at Cape
Preston, 100 kilometres south west of
Karratha in Western Australia’s Pilbara. CPM
is an Australian subsidiary of Hong Kong
incorporated CITIC Pacific.
The magnetite iron ore will undergo
significant downstream processing before it is
exported for steel making. Because of this, the
project features a significant infrastructure
investment including concentrate processing,
a 450 megawatt combined cycle gas fired
power station, a 51 gigalitre desalination plant
and new port facility.
