2012
Geology Scholarship
Kelly Campbell
2013
was the second of four years
I will spend at Curtin University
completing a double degree of applied
geology and environmental biology.
The financial support provided by the
WAMC scholarship has undoubtedly
been essential in alleviating the
difficulties associated with relocating
from a regional area to the city to
attend university, and has allowed
me greater focus on my studies.
This year I spent my winter university break at Hamlin Pool
in WA as a volunteer research assistant, collecting and collating
data and gaining a wealth of experience in and around the
Shark Bay world heritage site. The scholarship has not only
provided the means to allow me to participate in such projects, but
it has given me the benefit of a mentor who has provided guidance
and introduced me to a number of professionals in the area I wish
to pursue.
I am looking forward to further work experience in the industry
by undertaking vacation work during the 2013/14 summer break.
2012
Mining Engineering
Scholarship
Jak Kuser
Since
receiving
the
WAMC
scholarship in 2012, I have had an
industrious year. 2013 began with
completing vacation work, which
allowed me to back my coursework
with practical industry experience.
I then relocated to Kalgoorlie to
complete my third year of study
at the WA School of Mines, where I have been heavily involved
both in and out of the classroom. I am an active member of the
Student Guild and was elected WASM Wombats President for
2014.
Being a fierce competitor for WASM, in March I travelled to
Colorado to represent the school at the 35th International Mining
Games where we took home two gold medals.
The future looks bright; I am entering my final year of study
where I intend to complete my thesis project and then enter the
mining industry. I would like to thank the WA Mining Club and
co-sponsor Western Areas for their continued support of my future
career. This scholarship has allowed me to devote my time to
studies and other university-related activities.
2012
Environmental
Engineering Scholarship
Bohdan Davies
BeingawardedtheWAMCscholarship
in 2012 has been an invaluable asset
to furthering my university studies
in 2013. The financial backing of
the scholarship has allowed me to
focus more comprehensively on my
studies, which has translated into
high grades during 2013.
I participated as a volunteer in the World Renewable Energy
Congress in July. More recently I volunteered on a field trip with
student visitors from the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry
University of China.
Receiving the scholarship has also meant I have been able to
enjoy time away from university and work commitments. I have
experimented with a home aquaponics system, producing organic
fresh vegetables (and the occasional fish) for my housemates
and myself. This reinforces principles that I have learned
on sustainable urban design, high intensity agriculture and
permaculture through my course.
The assistance and opportunities gained by receiving the
WAMC scholarship have played a major role in realising my
goals and steering my professional development in the
right direction.
2012
Metallurgy
Scholarship
Anisa Mathews
As a result of winning the WAMC
scholarship, 2013 has been an
incredibly exciting year. It has
brought about positive changes
and growth both academically
and professionally.
Earlier this year, I travelled
to Colorado to compete in the
International Mining Games with the Murdoch Mets team. This
was an amazing experience that really increased my appreciation
of mining culture and its heritage.
Over the summer, I completed 12 weeks of vacation work with
ALS Metallurgy in the wet chemistry assay lab, which enabled me
to gain a huge amount of knowledge of, and experience in, the field
of metallurgical testing. This invaluable industry insight provided
me with the motivation to further my studies and enrol in a double
degree in metallurgy and chemical engineering during 2013.
I was only able to make this decision due to the financial assistance
of the scholarship, allowing me to reduce hours at my part-time
job and dedicate more time towards completing the double degree.
2012
Geology Scholarship
Samantha Murray
What an exciting and challenging
year it has been so far for 2013.
I have been committed to expanding
and diversifying my role within
the geological community and
have completed six months work
experience as a geological data clerk.
I have volunteered for the ‘Get into
Mining’ expo, and thanks to my
WAMC scholarship co-sponsor Sanderson Drilling, I have also
experienced diamond drilling firsthand.
