With the revised JORC reporting requirements, companies will need to provide
additional information to investors on the underlying material assumptions of their
resources so they can make more informed assessments of these potential projects.
John Hearne is Coffey’s General Manager Mining, Western Australia. He is responsible for the safety,
coordination and performance of approximately 70 employees, their support networks as well as their
interaction with clients and peers across Coffey. Over the last 28 years, John has been directly involved
in undertaking and managing all facets of mining projects from concept studies to full operational
management for both underground and open cut operations.
Coffey believes in ‘calling it right’, rather than compromising its integrity. In a similar fashion, John
is well regarded for his plain speaking and forthright, but fair, manner, and he will directly get to the
nub of any problem.
John paints a colourful picture of how he learned a valuable lesson early in his career, when he was a junior
engineer shiftbossing underground and had to call his ‘crusty old foreman’ after a minor accident late one night. “He didn’t
want to hear my problems. I was paid to make decisions, so make them he said! The lesson was back yourself, make the call
based on the best information at hand, and move on”, John said.
John has been involved in the WA Mining Club for four years now, and prior to that briefly when presentations were at the WACA.
He regards the vastly increased attendances to Club events today as a strong indicator of renewed business involvement in the Club.
