COFFEY INTERNATIONAL
Around the world, the mining industry
faces ongoing challenges to efficiently
and responsibly extract resources.
From exploration to development and
production, a consultant’s value can be
measured by their years of experience
earned working across regions,
commodities and all stages of the
project life-cycle. Understanding the
rock, soil, and water factors impacting
on a mine, and then the forces clients
will be exposed to, is vitally important.
Specialist knowledge of these materials
during the early planning phases of a
mine through to design and construction
can ensure sustainable development.
Coffey works with their clients to
manage the earth through a range
of geotechnical engineering services
including ground improvement, site
investigation, geotechnical interpretation,
analysis and design, and construction
advice. They provide geotechnical
engineering services in geophysics,
groundwater, environmental engineering
and inspection and testing.
Coffey’s greatest asset is its people –
people who are dedicated to pushing
the boundaries of professional
knowledge to achieve successful
outcomes in geotechnical engineering
by combining cost-effective solutions
with technical excellence.
Kim Le Roux has over 16 years of experience in the mining industry, and currently manages the Geotechnics
team for Coffey in Western Australia. The most rewarding part of Kim’s role is not only working on large and
challenging projects, but managing a team of professionals and creating an environment where engineers of
all levels feel empowered to be innovative and push their knowledge into new areas.
Kim has lived and worked in several countries including Canada and South Africa. As a geotechnical
engineer, Kim has focused her skills on mining and has developed particular skills in mine backfill
engineering, tunnelling and construction supervision, mine and quarry design, as well as water retention
and tailings dam engineering.
In her second year as an engineering geologist, Kim worked on the detailed investigation for a large
multifunction dam in Swaziland. A contractor claim on this job was the unforeseen ground conditions at
the granite rockfill quarry, where zones of completely weathered granite were more extensive than expected
and contaminated the fresh granite during quarrying. Kim needed to critically evaluate the investigation data and the source information
to understand and recognise what was there, as well as what was missing. Kim has learned from this experience to tackle problems by
being more proactive than reactive. As a new WAMC member, Kim is looking forward to the opportunities her membership will afford
her to meet new and interesting people.
