OZWEST (1976) PTY LTD
making light work of heavy haulage
Ozwest (1976) Pty Ltd provides accredited
Road Pilots (authorised persons) to the
general and heavy haulage transport
industry. When oversize loads need
moving, the company can obtain all the
permits (Western Power and Main Roads
WA) and traffic escorts as required, and
can then coordinate the elements needed
to ensure safe transport of oversize loads.
Ozwest’s consultation process includes
logistics calculations, advice on the
most appropriate legal route for moving
oversize loads and guidance on other
oversize, transport matters. For example,
Ozwest can advise on what size load
(
wide, long, heavy or overheight) may
move on a particular route or bridge
and how many Road Pilots are required
to escort such loads.
The company has an office in Toodyay
WA, and most of its Road Pilots are based
around the Perth area, although Ozwest
also has Pilots in most large country areas
of WA, and arrangements with other
Pilots and agencies in all other
Australian States.
A particularly memorable achievement
for Ozwest was managing the entire
logistics to successfully transport the
giant Boab Tree from Telegraph Creek,
northern Western Australia, to
Perth’s Kings Park. Ozwest arranged
permits, Police escorts and Road Pilots
at no cost, and even persuaded most
other parties to donate their time and
services also.

DID
Ozwest supports Australia’s military veterans and has donated its services to assist with
the movement of the fin of the submarine HMAS ORION to Rockingham Memorial Park.
Joe O’Malley, Ozwest’s owner/Director, started the company from scratch in April 1976.
Joe is a ‘hands-on’ Director, as comfortable behind his Pilot vehicle’s wheel as he is in customers’
boardrooms. Within Ozwest, Joe arranges all permits, oversees the company’s Road Pilots’ training, and
supports staff in their commitment to ‘going the extra mile’.
Joe is an active contributor to his chosen field: he sits on the transport industry’s Government Steering
Committee, is Chairperson for the Pilot Division of WA Road Transport Association, and a member of the
WA Road Pilot Association. He keeps up-to-date in his knowledge of the industry, and is frequently called
upon to provide logistical advice to different industry groups.
Reflecting on career highlights and lessons learned, Joe remembers the excitement of Ozwest’s first
$1 million turnover, and an early employer (who started and ran a very successful business during the
Depression) advising “if you look after your staff well, they will look after your business well”.
A member of the WA Mining Club for seven years, Joe finds the background information the luncheons provide
very helpful for running Ozwest, and he appreciates how he meets mining people he might otherwise not encounter.
