Today, Thiess mines over 100 million
tonnes of coal and ore, and moves about
600
million cubic metres of overburden
annually across 15 mines in Australia,
Indonesia and India. Operations are
supported by one of the largest mining
fleets globally, with a replacement value
of $3 billion.
Built in the 1930s on the vision,
ingenuity and hard work of the Thiess
brothers on Queensland’s Darling Downs,
in 1983 Thiess became a wholly owned
subsidiary of the Leighton Holdings Group.
Today Thiess has an annual turnover of
$7.5 billion and employs nearly 20,000

the biggest hydraulic excavator in the world.
As General Manager Australian Mining – Western Region, Viv Roberts’ goal is to position Thiess as a leading
provider of mine contracting and related services in its chosen markets by providing exceptional, innovative
solutions to clients. He develops new business opportunities, drives sustainable and profitable business
growth, and provides leadership across the business.
Valuing people as the most important part of any business, Thiess’ values are aligned with Viv’s own
personal principles, so the role comes as a natural fit for him. He is no longer surprised by what people
can do, both in a good or a bad way, and he advises that when dealing with people, and also Mother Nature,
