As Turner & Townsend’s Director – Natural Resources, Paul Laybourne oversees the West Australian
mining and metals cost centre. He sets and maintains high levels of service delivery, trains and mentors
team members, and assists clients to deliver challenging projects and programs.
Paul has worked for Turner & Townsend for almost seven years, across four countries and two continents.
His dedication, application, love of a challenge and strong sense of achievement are qualities called on in
the company’s ongoing projects and programs – some of the most demanding and complex in the world.
Attracting talented people in WA, and retaining them is tough. Paul says maintaining the right balance
of stimulating work, training and growth is continually challenging but rewarding.
In his experience, however, there are times when commitment and hard work driving a solution through
the wrong strategy are not enough. “Stopping a project to reassess a delivery strategy or contracting
approach is always painful, but correcting the issue and setting the correct path has to date returned
greater dividends in the medium to long-term, whatever the immediate fallout”, he says.
Paul recently joined the WA Mining Club. He hopes to meet like-minded professionals in mining to share experiences, opportunities
and solutions for furthering the growth of WA’s resource sector.
